These Are Hard Sayings
(An Exposition of John 6)
In John 6:1-13, John records Jesus feeding well over 5,000 people (cf. Matt. 14:21) with twelve baskets of food with fragments still remaining. Upon seeing this demonstration of Messianic power, the people wanted to take Jesus by force to make Him their King. Their outlook was “the crown before the cross”. However, Heaven’s predestined plan was and always remains, “the cross before the crown.” “The Valley of Humiliation before the mountaintop of Exaltation.” Jesus departs both the multitude and their vain plan to crown Him a King. So much for those who advocate that Jesus came to offer Israel an earthly paradise without Rome’s heels upon them.
The following day (6:22, 59) while in a synagogue in Capernaum, the famous discourse by Jesus as “The Bread of Life--The Bread of Heaven” is given. These penetrating and disturbing words from the greatest of all teachers is not well received. In verses 41, 43 and 61, the Jews, many of whom were His professed “disciples” were said to have murmured against their professed “Master”. However, Jesus never apologizes, never regroups to start His message over again, and never complains to His Father. He just continues His message undeterred by their stubborn unbelief. It was their rigid literalism (see: John 2:18-22; 3:4; 4:11, 15) that always got in their way from really hearing what Jesus was truly saying and implying.
In this mini-series, we shall see that Jesus is the Great Divider of Men. He separates His sheep from the world’s goats. His message has the uncanny ability to expose and remove the apostates and reprobates--even in our own days! This is indeed a hard saying!
