The Use of Pronouns in
Scriptures
There are numerous 'Pronouns' used in the
scriptures. To
understand the scriptures you must determine 'who' is speaking and
also the persons being spoken to or about. To
further understand these pronouns you must determine who they are -
by examining the text they are found in. [Just
click on 4572 above and check out the word 'thyself' for
example. Then 2040 is referring back to thyself. ]
The first 'who' below is referring back to God
the Father. The 'us' is referring back to Eph 1:1 " 'to the
saints' which are at Ephesus, and to the faithful in Christ
Jesus." < This includes all Christians in all ages > For what saith
the scripture? Abraham believed God, and it was
counted unto him for
righteousness." Romans 4:3.
Now follow on in the text below were the pronoun
will be followed by the person being referred to in [-------].
"Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord
Jesus Christ, who <>[God the Father]
hath blessed us
[saint] with all spiritual blessings in heavenly places in
Christ. According as he [God] hath chosen us [saint]
in him [our Lord Jesus Christ] before the foundation of the
world, that we [saints] should be holy and without blame
before him
[God the Father] in love. Having
predestinated us [saints] unto the adoption of children by
Jesus Christ to himself,
[God the Father] according to the good pleasure of his
[God the Father's] will," Ephesians 1:3-5.
Identifying Pronouns Referring To
Deity
As we see above 'pronouns' can refer to: God the Father -
our Lord Jesus Christ - or the Holy Spirit - as well as
saints and sinners alike. A method that can be used in scripture is to
capitalize all references to deity. Therefore, in your Bible you can use a
pen and make the first lower case letter into a capital when the pronoun
refers to a member of the godhead - or trinity. You can change "thee to
Thee". So - the above verse would appear like this:
"According as He hath chosen us [saint] in Him before the
foundation of the world, that we [saints] should be holy and without
blame before Him in love. Having
predestinated us [saints] unto the adoption of children by Jesus
Christ to Himself according to the good pleasure of His
