The
Acts of the Apostles
The
Acts of the Apostles is probably one of the New
Testament books that is both familiar to many
and studied the most. So is there really anything
new that could be learned and be profitable for us
to take time to review it again?
It
may surprise you what can be gleaned from just the
first few verses of chapter one. Have you taken time
to really understand what happened after the risen
Christ last met with His apostles before His
ascension back to Heaven?
Although
the apostles had spent three and a half years with
Christ during His earthly ministry, they seemed to
lack a spiritual backbone, true spiritual
discernment, and spiritual direction to accomplish
the great responsibilities that they would
immediately be tasked to do. If you were asked
to explain how these very same men that were so
spiritually out of touch in the gospel accounts
became the spiritual giants that wrote much of
scriptures in the remainder of the New Testament,
how would you explain this transformation?
A
close study of the introductory verses of Acts
chapter one, and comparing scripture with scripture
will reveal how this great transformation of their
lives took place. As the study continues, a great
deal of information will disclose how the church
that Jesus built was in existence long before the
day of Pentecost ever came about. This is not just a
supposition, but a reality, as we find all the
components that are incorporated in the present day
church all being practiced during Christ’s
ministry, and long before Jesus ever ascended to His
Father's right hand in glory.
We
also find that about 120 believers were all
assembled for prayer and an official and organized
business meeting for the purpose of appointing an
apostle to replace Judas. They were
“churching” together, in the same manner as we
congregate in our present assemblies. One additional
purpose was to select with God's approval the
Apostle Matthias.
The great commission is still alive and spreading in
the days in which we live. However, many have fallen
away from a sound faith, and have departed to a
gospel of Easy Believism which is another gospel.
The Apostle Paul warned the Ephesians Elders in Acts
20:26-36 "Wherefore I take you to record
this day, that I am pure from the blood of all men
.For I have not shunned to declare unto you 'All the
Counsel of God'. 'Take heed therefore unto
yourselves, and to all the flock, over the which the
Holy Ghost hath made you overseers, to feed the
church of God, which He hath purchased with His own
blood.' ' For I know this, that after my departing
shall grievous wolves enter in among you, not
sparing the flock. Also of your own selves shall men
arise, speaking perverse things, to draw away
disciples after them. Therefore watch, and remember'
. . 'And now, brethren, I commend you to God, and to
the Word of His Grace, which is able to build you
up, and to give you an inheritance among all them
which are sanctified'. . . 'And when he had thus
spoken, he kneeled down, and prayed with them
all."
Neighbors, we need to take heed of what we hear and
believe, for we can easily be deceived, if the
pastor or teacher has strayed from sound doctrine
of the holy scriptures. Remember this, every
person including Jesus and all the Apostles only had
the Old Testament as the only source of written
revelation from God. There was no New Testament written
until the Holy Spirit moved upon the hearts of the
NT writers. So it is imperative that we do not
discount any portion of the OT without correctly
understanding that the OT concealed what the NT
reveals. .
Even
the Apostle Peter's first sermon on Pentecost
preached NT realities of OT scriptures, saying
"This is That" as he preach the prophesy
of Joel. These comments only scratch the surface of
all that this study will reveal. So take time to
listen and glean the blessing of this blessed book
that exposes how our Lord Jesus Christ inspired our
ancient church elders to spread the gospel into the
uttermost parts of the world. Amen!
